| タイトル | Relationships between Globalized Society and Working Holiday Programs: Comparing Japan and Thailand | ||||
| 内容 | This study examines the push–pull factors influencing Japanese and Thai youths who use Australia’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) and Work and Holiday (WAH) programs. Drawing on interviews with eight participants , the research reveals clear contrasts rooted in each country’s social and economic conditions. Japanese respondents , shaped by Japan’s simultaneous new-graduate recruitment system and growing domestic globalization after events such as the Tokyo Olympics , primarily sought overseas experience and skill development—especially English—to advance in careers similar to those they held before departure. In contrast , Thai participants emphasized improving English for better job prospects in Thailand’s rapidly digitalizing and tourist-driven economy , alongside earning higher wages abroad. Unique Thai pull factors included minimal time difference with home and strong expatriate communities , reflecting the high cultural value placed on familial and social connectedness. Post-program outcomes also diverged: Japanese typically returned to jobs within their previous industry , whereas Thai often shifted into entirely new fields. The study concludes that motivations and post-migration paths are heavily shaped by each country’s work culture and social environment. |

| 講評 | This thesis utilizes the author’s own unique positionality and experience to analyze , cross-culturally , the experiences and motivations of young workers involved in the working holiday program in Australia. I very much appreciated the author’s consistency throughout the entire process. From the beginning , there was a clear goal , which the author steadily worked towards. Any feedback was effectively and swiftly incorporated , meaning that the remaining work was always manageable. Moreover , I appreciate that the author was able to interview two sets of youths from two different locations , using two different languages for interviewing. In the end , it is clear that working holiday programs such as the one featured in this study involve many different decisions , motivations , and future applications—often shaped by the worker’s own society’s background. Overall , this is an original , solid contribution to the literature on working holiday programs. |
