タイトル | From Apathy to Action: A Study of Social Activism Among Japanese Youth |
内容 | When the topic of social movements is discussed , a sense of solidarity is considered important to sustain social movements. Therefore , the action of "solidarity"is likely to be accompanied by a negative image of agression and exclusivity. Behind the scenes ,there are techniques that incite extreme emotions , which can lead to anxiety and conflict , and undermine the sustainability of the movement. In response to this , it is necessary to rethink the nature of social movements that are sustainnable and open to society. In this study , I examined the following factors of continuous social movements: (1) Influence on self-growth and identity formation , (2) community formation as a safety space , (3) movement with positive emotions , (4) use of media that are easily accepted by social movements such as art. I concluded these factors are key to making the movement sustainable and enhancing its significance as a practice of social activism. |

講評 | Even though the current environmental crisis cares nothing for national or cultural borders , the local response to the crisis has differed significantly from place to place. While large-scale social movements with various protests and marches have swept much of Europe and North America , Japan remains notably quiet. She explores this phenomenon in her important study , arguing that for social movements to succeed in contemporary Japan , they need to shed the negative image associated with such activities , an image that grew out of the student protests of the previous century. Building on interviews and personal experience , she describes a culturally sensitive approach to social activism. With widespread apathy to the environmental crisis , such an approach is sorely needed. |
