タイトル | Fan’s Narcissistic Love and Competition within Contents: An Inspection of The Status of Fan’s Favorite Manga and Anime |
内容 | The excessive love that fans have for their favorite subject can sometimes lead to disdain towards other subjects which is presumed to be influenced by notions of superiority and competition between them. This study distinguishes between fans' concern about the superiority of their favorite content and their mere love for the content itself. This research defines the former attachment as "Narcissistic Love." To investigate how this affection develops in non-competitive settings , such as manga and anime , a survey was conducted among fans. Narcissistic Love was measured through the fans' concern for the status of their favorite works. The quantitative data revealed that there are two aspects of concern for the status of favorite works and among them , the one that exhibits characteristics more akin to Narcissistic Love showed a significant correlation with the belief about competition between works and attitude on tastes that determine the superiority of works. These results suggest that even in settings where competition is inherently unnecessary , fans may perceive their favorite works in a competitive context and judge their superiority. Finally , this study also considered the impact of competition orchestrated by the culture industry on fans and the potential for fans to resist such influences. |

講評 | One of the strengths of this thesis is that it is something that nobody else could have thought of; it truly is the unique product of the author’s particular ideas. Specifically , the concept of “narcissistic love” is novel and I believe to be an accurate way to describe (part of) the contemporary digital media ecology. Another strength is that once the author committed to their plan , they gave themselves to it wholeheartedly , and the quantitative data provided plenty of revealing insights. I do think it would have been possible to include more in-depth anthropological literature about rivalry or “othering” , as well as in-depth analysis of the culture industry. But that is why the undergraduate thesis is but just one part of one’s academic journey , and the future has plenty of opportunities to explore new directions. I hope that the author can combine their unique strengths—independence , passion for research , tenacity—with an open-mindedness towards new perspectives and research trajectories. |
