The term “kyara” , frequently heard among young people today in phrases such as “aho kyara” (foolish character) , “tennen kyara” (airhead character) , or “tsukkomi kyara” (witty character) , is said to originate from the “characters” that appear in anime and manga. This thesis focuses on how kyara are used within young people’s communities and how they influence their interpersonal relationships. While there is extensive research on kyara or youth communities , studies specifically examining the connection between kyara and their relationships remain scarce. By examining the interplay between kyara and their relationships , the research aims to shed light on the distinctive traits that define how young people interact and bond utilizing “kyara” as well as uncovering what they prioritize and value when building connections with others. Through individual interviews with university students and group conversation analysis , I found that external factors largely determine one’s kyara—specifically , the environment and the people they interact with. This indicates that kyara is something created more by others than by oneself. Furthermore , young people skillfully utilize kyara to bring enjoyment and laughter to their interpersonal relationships which ultimately strengthened their bonds and played a significant role in maintaining their equal relationships. Through this research , I hope I can offer some encouragement to those who struggle to fit into their communities because of their kyara or who have become targets of bullying. |
