タイトルTowards Zero Waste:A Case Study of Kamikatsu Town's Sustainable Initiatives and Character Formation
内容 This paper explores the efforts of Kamikatsu, a small Japanese town, with a big vision for Zero Waste initiatives. The global waste crisis, predicted to reach 32 billion tons by 2050, necessitates sustainable solutions. Kamikatsu's Zero Waste project began in 1998, transitioning from incineration to extensive waste separation, and achieving a recycling rate of 81% in 2020. The town's initiatives, including active citizen participation and the integration of tourism, have gotten global attention. This study emphasizes the crucial role of character formation in the success of Zero Waste, proposing effective measures to prompt a transition from the mass production and consumption system to a Zero Waste lifestyle. Challenges include sanitary waste and the need for more innovative solutions, referencing Oki Town's diaper recycling. The study suggests increased focus on character formation in Zero Waste efforts and its broader applicability beyond Kamikatsu, envisioning a future where Zero Waste becomes a feasible and widespread practice.
講評 Kamikatsu is a model for what the world could look like if we were to become serious about waste management. Based on fieldwork observations from Kamikatsu, Mone discusses the challenges of exporting the zero waste model to other parts of Japan. My hope is that she will continue with this project and help lead the way into an era of ethical consumption.
