The Educational Significance of Campfires
Despite the unprecedented circumstances of COVID, the students of this year’s seminar completed their research, writing graduation papers that were both informative and significant. Most of the students focused on the environment. Students affirmed the critical importance of agricultural learning, food education, and reducing food loss, while highlighting the fact that school curricula have for too long overlooked the importance of teaching children the rudiments of food production. Others noted that despite recent emphasis on SDGs and other sustainability measures, society remains riddled with contradictions and mixed motives that undermine real progress. With COVID preventing most forms of fieldwork, students were largely limited to using written materials. This was done with great success in studies that looked at Ainu education and moral education. Finally, in one of the most original thesis topics in recent years, a student examined the educational value of campfires. As the seminar advisor, I look forward to a post-COVID world where we can once again get together in person to build a campfire and discuss environmental issues and other research interests. Well done to all of you!
